The superb, highly interesting, Great War D.S.O. medal group of William Bradley D.S.O. R.D.

Distinguished Service Order, Gazetted 27th June 1917. Act Cmdr H.M.Y. Minona.  Recommended by C-in-C Scotland. “For his prompt action in command of Minona, in attacking a hostile submarine from which a torpedo was fired, passing about 20 feet off the Yacht on 19th April 1915. Also for endeavouring to ram hostile submarines on the 28th April and 9th July 1915.”

December 1917 – March 1918, HMS President (Convoy Duties). March 1918 – April 1919 – HM Yacht Iolaire (To Assist Rear Admiral Boyle, Stornoway), Acting Captain. April 1919 – HMS Vivid (For Leave). June 16, 1919 – Reverts to Retired List, as Commander, in recognition of services rendered during the war. (Considered inefficient for service as Commodore of Convoys).

1921 papers reveal he had been in Command of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine Trading between Canada and Australasia for 2 years and had recently taken up the shore based role of Shore Port Warden, Port of Vancouver, B.C.

Born – April 11, 1866 (Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire). He died 13th October 1934.

H.M.Y. Minona (1906) has also had a long and distinguished career and she still exists – “Today she lives on as one of the Greatest Superyachts in Hollywood History and amongst the Top 100 Superyachts of Asia-Pacific, despite being 115 years old”

Having seen service in both the Great War and the Second World War she was bought by the great Richard Burton as a gift to Elizabeth Taylor in 1967. On purchase they named the yacht Kalizma named after their three daughters Kate, Liza and Maria.

On 21 May 2022, in London, at the 17th annual edition of the BOAT International World Superyacht Awards, The Kalizma was announced the winner of a “ Judges’ Special Award” and was nominated for the “Best Rebuilt Superyacht Award”.
